I have been talking to several recruiters, hiring managers and human resource managers about how they conduct interviews and I have learned that the best person for a job is often not the one that ends up of being considered. The hired candidate is often the job-seeker who does the best job in responding to interview questions and showcasing his or her fit with the job, department, and organization. In most cases, the average people get hired because they are fit in the position.
Here is what you should say to the interviewer to impress him/her at your next interview and to make him/her want to hire you:
Delivery of information in an interview is crucial and key element to success. The quality of information you are delivering and the way you are delivering are both important.
Learn how to highlight your top skills and how to demonstrate a close match between your skills set and what is being required. All you have to do is, recount your past actions and achievements and link them to the new job including what you have done, how you did, the context in which you did it and the desired outcomes. You can change the whole nature of the interview when you ask great questions. It transforms from the interrogating nature to the discussion. Learn the art of how to pitch good questions in a decent way that shows you are serious about the job.
The biggest way you can impress interviewer is to take time to prepare your own answers rather than simply using answers that you have read or heard somewhere.
Get to know the company and its task before you appear for an interview. There is nothing more impressive and credible than to show your knowledge about the company and its missions. Relate company’s mission to your skills set and tell the hiring professionals that how can you be beneficial for their organization.
Be grounded that interviews are more into rapport building as they are about answering questions. It is also about interacting whilst simultaneously articulating smart answers. If you fail to establish rapport and trust, it is unlikely that you will get the job no matter how technically brilliant you are.
Justify your answers and talk confidently about your career achievements in an interview about your career accomplishments. There are different techniques to summarize your accomplishment using S-P-A-R:
- what was the Situation in which you were working,
- what was the Problem that you faced,
- what Actions you took and,
- what were the Results? The results must be quantifiable.
In an interview you feel under pressure and your brains perform sub-optimally. No doubt, you must have heard all sort of advice on how to overcome such pressure but I am thrilled to refer this video of TEDX talk by Dr Alan Watkins. In his video, he not only explains how you can actively control your brain power but also how breathing has huge effects on our brains performance. So, if you eagerly want to know how to perform brightly at your next interview, it will give you effective ways to it. Finally, as the interview winds down, ask about the next steps in the process and the timetable the employer expects to use to make a decision about the position.
